Baramgot-South Korea Folklore

Daughter Marine is a mythical goddess of Korea. In ancient times, a king who had six oang daughter was so upset when he got his seventh daughter. Later, he ordered his youngest daughter discarded. Daughter who discarded it was the daughter of Bari and its name has meaning, 'the daughter of the banished.' Although the daughter had grown up without knowing the biological parents,
he risked his life and work into the underworld to obtain medicine that could save their parents seriously ill. On the way to the afterlife, he do good to the people he met and devote to guard drug in the form of holy water. That is why, daughter Bari became the goddess who is responsible for the journey to the afterlife. Bari trip and the role of the daughter who saved many lives may be said to be similar to the role of a shaman that connect people and the world of gods. Therefore, the shaman in Korea honor the daughter Bari as their protector.One Gugak music group named Baramgot showed particular interest in the mystical tale of the princess Bari. by presenting folklore with traditional music creatively. Baramgot group name is a compound word formed from the word 'Baram' which means 'wind' and 'Got' which means 'earth and water meet.' Baramgot formed in 2004 by Won Il who has devoted attention to providing a way to communicate between traditional and modern music. Baramgot consists of traditional musicians such as Park Sun-a play Gayageum, Park U-jae who bermin geomungo, Lee A-ram play daegeum, Park Jae-rok who plays Sitar, a string instrument of India, and the group leader Won Il who plays Piri and Percussion in addition to conducting composition. Among them, Park Sun-a has a privileged background. He was born in Japan and studied at the School Minjok Gayageum associated with Jochongryeon, pro-Pyongyang federation of Korean residents in Japan. He also studied at the University of Music and Dance Pyongyang in North Korea. But now, he does most of its activities in South Korea along with the group Baramgot. Baramgot main goal is to re-create myths or legends Korea in a modern way and share it with the citizens of the world. Last year, the group perform music game titled "First Day of the Last" is based on the subject 'Kkokdu' and got a positive response. 'Kkokdu' is a wooden puppet that adorned a bier that carry the coffin with the dead placed inside. It is usually decorated with beautiful flowers and the wooden doll. For ordinary people living in poverty throughout their lives, it is a luxury stretcher first and last at the same time in their lives. So, this group works on creative music that is searching for the meaning of life and death through Kkokdu. Baramgot has received rave reviews in Europe if demonstrate the play based on the story, traditional melodies and rhythms.\
